Culture Shock is Menagerie of Misfits’ Harmony Day celebration — a space where our communities, stories and identities take centre stage. This show honours the ways culture lives in our bodies, our music, our movement, our humour and our histories. It’s a night for artists to share where they come from, what shaped them, and how they remix those influences into something uniquely their own.

At Menagerie of Misfits, culture isn’t something to “borrow” or “sample” — it’s something we carry, question, reclaim, celebrate and transform. Performers are invited to draw from their heritage, their chosen communities, their subcultures, and the worlds that raised them. Whether that’s traditional forms, contemporary fusion, queer club culture, diaspora nostalgia, or the messy, beautiful in‑between spaces many of us live in.

This show welcomes acts that honour culture with care, creativity and personal truth — not caricature or costume. We celebrate the artists who bring their whole selves, their lived experience, and their imagination to the stage.

What We Are Looking For

• Pieces that feel bold, tender, political, nostalgic, joyful, rebellious or healing — as long as they come from a place of authenticity rather than stereotype
• Dance and movement rooted in lived experience
• Multidisciplinary acts that weave together music, storytelling, costume, ritual, humour or visual art
• Performances exploring culture, identity, sexuality, bodies, ability, heritage, queerness, subcultures and chosen family

Discoteque is Menagerie of Misfits’ next high-energy, immersive event at Casino Canberra on Saturday 23 May 2026. Inspired by the rise of disco and its lasting impact on music, dance, fashion, and nightlife culture, this event celebrates disco not just as a genre, but as a movement — one that broke barriers, championed self‑expression, and created space for queer communities, people of colour, and anyone who needed a place to belong. Its bold visuals and fashion make it the perfect playground for creativity, costume, and theatricality.

At Menagerie of Misfits, we approach disco as both history and evolution. Performers can bring the era to life with classic disco sounds, styles, and energy, or reimagine it with modern club culture, electronic beats, visual artistry, and genre‑bending performance. We encourage big looks, strong storytelling, bold choices and the unexpected.

Discoteque also honours disco’s legacy as the root of today’s club culture, house music, and electronic scenes. It celebrates queer nightlife, underground aesthetics, and the unapologetic self‑expression that still fuels dance floors today.
